In the glass

  1. Appearance

Clear golden-amber to copper, with a modest off-white head that recedes quickly.

  2. Nose

Pine, citrus zest and resinous hop, with an herbal undertone and a restrained caramel-malt note underneath.

  3. Palate

Light-medium and lean through the middle, only moderately carbonated. Pine and grapefruit peel lead; herbal hop and a gentle malt sweetness sit behind them. Flavor intensity drops from the nose. Bitterness is moderate, resinous and herbal.

  4. Finish

Moderately dry. Hop flavor recedes first; herbal and pine bitterness linger after the citrus has left.

How beer-like is it?

Recognizably American IPA on the aroma. The lighter, leaner palate is where the nonalcoholic construction shows.

The beer

The aroma is the West Coast half of the beer. Pine, citrus zest and resinous hop come first, with an herbal undertone and a restrained caramel-malt note underneath. That is the familiar flagship register, and it is stronger than what the palate can hold.

The pour is clear, golden-amber tending toward copper, with a modest off-white head that recedes quickly. Light-medium in body and lean through the middle, only moderately carbonated. Pine and grapefruit peel lead the sip; herbal hop and a gentle malt sweetness sit behind them. Flavor intensity drops from the nose. Moderate, resinous bitterness and the carbonation give the beer its definition; the malt does not add much depth.

The finish is moderately dry. Hop flavor recedes first. Herbal and pine bitterness stay after the citrus has left. Sweetness never takes the pour. Texture and persistence give way before the hop signature does. It remains a recognizable American IPA — thinner in the middle than the nose promised, and refreshing rather than sticky. Pour it cold when you want pine and bitterness without a sweet middle.

How to drink it

Research notes

The product page says IPNA uses the same hops, malt, yeast and water as Lagunitas IPA — Citra, Mosaic and Columbus hops, English crystal malt and Canadian 2-row barley — and that the beer is pulled before flavors get too mature, leaving it just less than 0.5% alcohol. The specification panel prints 0.50% ABV, 20 IBU, OG 1.00, and 80 calories, 18 g carbohydrate and 3 g sugar per 12 fl oz. The producer packshot and editor-supplied bottle photos show the can states less than 0.5% alc/vol and 12 fl oz. The physical bottle names Lagunitas Brewing Company, Petaluma, CA. The bottle and a six-pack listing carry different barcodes, so both stay in the barcode fact without assuming their package relationship. Bryan Donaldson (Brewing Innovation Manager) describes brewhouse manipulation and dry hopping with yeast, and says no heat is applied to remove alcohol; he withholds the exact process. In 2020 Max Wertheimer told Beverage Daily the brewery did not use dealcoholization. Producer flavor copy (herbal, lemon, hedgerow) is not a Dry Standard tasting.
