The wine

Chardonnay without alcohol usually loses its middle — the part where oak and fruit meet and the wine gets its shape. This one keeps it.

Citrus blossom and honeysuckle come first, with oak sitting behind them rather than over them. That order matters: the flower is the headline, and the wood is a low, steady note underneath. On a grape that can so easily turn into a plank of vanilla when the alcohol is stripped away, restraint here reads as competence.

Through the palate the florals carry rather than fade, which is the opposite of what a lighter nonalcoholic Chardonnay tends to do. Citrus blossom and honeysuckle stay joined, with that gentle oak giving them something to lean on instead of a frame to fight. It is aromatic rather than rich, which puts it on the crisper, more lifted side of the grape.

The finish is clean and fresh, and it stays that way — no cloying turn, no sweetness left behind. What it does not do is build: there is lift and perfume, but not much weight or length under it. That is the honest ceiling on the score. It is 83.

Drink it cold and uncomplicated, where you want the aromatics to do the work rather than a wine to sit and develop.

Research notes

Nugan Estate’s product page describes an Australian non-alcoholic Chardonnay made by triple distillation with the alcohol removed, at 14 kcal and 1.3 g sugar per 100 ml; its ABV field is blank and it names no region. The US importer Serendipity lists 0.0% ABV, 750 ml, 100% Chardonnay, Riverina (New South Wales) and triple distillation as a deliberately slow, low-temperature process. Southern Starz lists 16 kcal, 3.5 g carbohydrate and 1.6 g sugar per 125 ml serving. Producer tasting copy stays off this record.
