The wine

Breakaway Gewürztraminer is the aromatic white bottling in the Breakaway series from Weingut Bergdolt-Reif & Nett, a fifth-generation estate in Duttweiler in Germany’s Pfalz region. While many dealcoholized German whites stick to Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, or Pinot Blanc, winemaker Christian Nett chose Gewürztraminer for the estate’s upper-tier Breakaway range because the grape’s intense terpene aromatics—rose petal and ripe grape character—are well suited to survive alcohol removal.

Unlike the wood-matured Breakaway reds, the Gewürztraminer base wine is vinified and matured in stainless steel before dealcoholization. Ethanol is then removed through low-temperature vacuum distillation paired with resin-based aroma recovery, capturing the wine’s volatile aromatic fraction and returning it to the dealcoholized liquid. The estate finishes the wine in a decidely off-dry to medium-sweet balance, recording 0.27% ABV, 58.8 g/L residual sugar, and 6.0 g/L total acidity in a 750 ml flute bottle under screwcap.

This record is an unscored research profile compiled from producer and importer documentation. No firsthand cellar tasting has been conducted by The Dry Standard, so aromatic fidelity, sweetness balance, and finish remain unassessed until a bottle is poured.

Producer and importer flavor copy (rose petals, ripe grapes, exotic spice, and pronounced fruit sweetness) and the importer's qualitative technology comparison table are recorded as source context, not a Dry Standard tasting.

Where sources disagree

Sources disagree on the following points.

  • Product: US importer Elite Wine Selections titles its product page "Bergdolt, Reif & Nett Reverse Gewurztraminer Dealcoholized," but the bottle photograph on that listing clearly prints "Breakaway GEWÜRZTRAMINER entalkoholisiert" on the black Breakaway label, and the producer's websites, webshop, E30 data sheet, and e-label all classify the wine under the Breakaway line. The canonical product name follows the bottle label and producer documentation.
  • ABV: The producer's E30 data sheet, both winery product pages, and the shop-linked e-label (ref E30 2026-002) declare 0.27% ABV. US importer Elite Wine Selections lists 0.2% ABV, while the producer webshop body text prints the 0.5% Vol. statutory ceiling. The canonical value follows the 0.27% producer analytical declaration.
  • Origin: The producer's alcohol-free wine site states that its dealcoholized wines use exclusively estate-grown wine from Duttweiler in the Pfalz. The E30 data sheet includes a standard clause stating the product may be made wholly or partly from wine or grapes of partner winemakers. Germany and the Duttweiler/Pfalz estate address are explicitly sourced.
  • ABV: A supplied English version of the E30 sheet (PDF created May 2025) declares 0.20% vol. The current German E30 sheet, both winery product pages and the e-label (ref E30 2026-002) declare 0.27%, and the US importer lists 0.2%. The canonical value stays at the current 0.27% declaration; the supplied sheet appears to carry an earlier analysis.
  • Sugar: The supplied English E30 sheet declares residual sugar 51.5 g/L and total acidity 6.3 g/L; the current German E30 sheet and e-label declare 58.8 g/L and 6.0 g/L. The canonical value follows the current German sheet and e-label. The supplied sheet is undated apart from its May 2025 file-creation date, so it may reflect an earlier vintage.
