Sans alcool: what the French label means

The short answer

Sans alcool means without alcohol. On French dealcoholized wine it may accompany the legal name vin désalcoolisé at or below 0.5% vol. Vin sans alcool is not a legal denomination. The phrase does not prove a stated 0.0% residual.

The legal French wine name is vin désalcoolisé, not vin sans alcool.
Sans alcool in that wine context reaches 0.5% vol.
A search finds this ≤0.5% cellar; production type stays on the review.

Sans alcool is French for without alcohol. Shoppers type it, and vin sans alcool, when they want the French shelf. In this cellar the search finds drinks at or below 0.5% ABV.

What the word is allowed to mean

DGCCRF guidance on désalcoolisation des vins (checked 21 October 2026) allows sans alcool on drinks from wine dealcoholization at or below 0.5% vol, beside the legal name vin désalcoolisé. Vin sans alcool is not a legal denomination.

A 0,0 % vol claim has its own stricter conditions. This page does not collapse sans alcool into 0.0%.

No France-specific legal ABV definition for bière sans alcool was verified here. Beer results still have to meet this cellar’s 0.5% ceiling, and the sourced ABV on the card remains the fact.

What it does not prove

A stated 0.0% residual. See 0.0% vs under 0.5%.
That the wine is dealcoholized. Vin désalcoolisé is the production name.
That every result is French. The query is category language in an English cellar.
