Verdict Lot 229 is Grenache from the South of France, fermented as sparkling wine, then dealcoholized by reverse osmosis to under 0.5% ABV. Freixenet's dealcoholized sparkling rosé is Airén-led, with soft red berry, easy fruit and a short, candy-adjacent close. Red berry, ripe peach and pear meet vibrant acidity and a lightly earthy finish in this sparkling rosé.

Likeness The dry bead and the berry-and-pith line read as sparkling rosé. Thinner than crémant, and that missing weight is where the likeness stops. The soft bead is wine. Sugar does more work than acid, so once it warms it is easier pink fizz than a convincing sparkling rosé. The acid does the wine work. Red berry, ripe peach, and pear stay vivid, and the mouthfeel is finer than the usual alcohol-removed pink. A little earth on the close keeps it on the wine side of soda.
