Chardonnay is the grape most non-alcoholic wine shoppers reach for first, and it is one of the harder ones to get right. More than twenty have been tasted here. The best keep what makes Chardonnay recognizable: orchard fruit, a rounder texture, and oak used as a frame rather than a flavor. The weaker ones lose the middle of the wine and fill it with sweetness.

Every wine below was tasted and scored by this desk. Research records do not enter the ranking. How we score.

The short list

  • Oceano Zero Chardonnay — 88. The most refined of the set: bright citrus and mouthwatering acidity meet a supple, buttery middle, with a subtle saline edge. Dry and light, but it never tastes thin.
  • Luminara Chardonnay — 87. The richest: ripe orchard fruit, gentle oak and a long, vinous finish. The one to choose if you miss the weight of a conventional California Chardonnay.
  • Lautus Chardonnay — 86. Peach, pear and vanilla on a soft, creamy mid-palate, finishing fresh and lightly nutty. Fruit and oak stay in balance.
  • Paragraph Chardonnay — 84. Green apple, peach and light toast over a rounded middle. Dry and refreshing, with bright acidity keeping a hint of butterscotch in check.
  • Isabel Non-Alcoholic Chardonnay — 82. Pear, yellow apple and vanilla, creamy and lightly oaked, finishing bright and toasty.

Rich or fresh: pick a direction

Non-alcoholic Chardonnays split into two camps, and knowing which you want saves a disappointing bottle.

Rich and rounded. Luminara, Lautus and Isabel go for creamy texture, vanilla and oak. They come closest to the full-bodied Chardonnay many people picture, and they carry a little more sweetness to help build that weight. Luminara does it best, with a finish that lasts.

Fresh and dry. Oceano Zero and Paragraph lead with citrus, apple and acidity, using oak and roundness as support. They taste drier and more precise, and they work better with food. Oceano Zero manages both: dry and lively, yet with a buttery middle.

Where most fall short

The common failure is sweetness standing in for body. When the alcohol goes, so does much of the wine’s weight, and some producers compensate with residual sugar. The result tastes soft and fruity but simple, with a short finish. Several Chardonnays in the high 70s here follow that pattern: pleasant enough, but low in intensity and quick to fade.

Lighter wines are not automatically weaker. RELAX Zero Chardonnay (81) is sweet and thin by design, with light fizz, and it works as an easy pour. It simply does not taste much like traditional Chardonnay.

For why this happens, see Why body is hard without alcohol and Why non-alcoholic wine tastes sweet.

How they were made

Every wine on the short list is dealcoholized: real Chardonnay, made as wine, with the alcohol removed afterward. Oceano Zero and Paragraph use vacuum distillation; Luminara, Lautus and Isabel use spinning cone. Neither method guarantees a better result. The starting wine and how the producer rebuilds texture matter more. See Spinning cone vs vacuum distillation.

The style filter below also includes sparkling wines made from Chardonnay, such as blanc de blancs. For bubbles specifically, see Best sparkling wines. For whites beyond Chardonnay, see How to buy non-alcoholic white wine.
